Mega Shelters

All weather mega shelters are designed to cover very large areas such as netball courts or eating/learning spaces. Using galvanised steel framing and laserlite roofing these units are the perfect outdoor resource for any school or learning centre. Students can have lunch under mega shelters and be safe and sheltered from the sun or showers of rain. Mega Shelters are even large enough for classes to have physical education under it, and outdoor assemblies to be held. Imagine being able to get your students outside every day – even if it’s raining!

Mega Shelters in Schools Provide the Adequate Sun Protection Your Child Needs

In New Zealand there has always been a strong focus on outdoor recreation as an important part of child development. This can be of great benefit to our youth, so long as schools take on the responsibility of providing them with effective sun protection, like mega shelters. With UV levels at an all time high, many schools in the North Shore and all around Auckland have taken to building mega shelters as a way to combat harmful rays.

Skin cancer is an ever present concern in our society, with the great tragedy being that it is entirely avoidable with the right precautions. To this end there have been sun smart initiatives, like mega shelters, put in place to educate children on sun safety. These measures are positive in addressing the danger posed by UV rays, but the fact remains that many schools simply do not have enough shaded areas for students to play outside in. By installing mega shelters, schools are able to transform previously unprotected regions into sun smart alternatives. This is especially important during lunchtime, as this is the period during which we are at the highest risk of sun damage.

As part of the SunSmart Schools Accreditation Programme (SSAP), the Cancer Society have developed a checklist of sun protection measures schools should either have in place already or be in the process of implementing. Included in this is the requirement of adequate shade provision. If a school is found to be lacking in this area they may, in tandem with the Cancer Society, attempt to seek financial assistance from the Ministry of Education in order to address this shortfall. This can go some way to mitigating the monetary cost of putting up mega shelters as a way of protecting kindergarten, primary and secondary school children from skin cancer and other forms of sun damage. Mega shelters can also be advantageous during the winter months, allowing for continued outdoor activity even when raining.

Covering an area of roughly two netball courts, they provide an all-weather space for physical education classes, sports practices and even outdoor assemblies. Schools are able to run as per usual without the hindrance of bad weather to disrupt routine. In today’s computer driven age it’s more important than ever that children be encouraged to participate in outdoor activities. It is the responsibility of the school that children don’t miss out on the health and fitness benefits of an active lifestyle. These mega shelters are constructed with galvanised steel framing and laserlite roofing, creating a stable structure capable of protecting a large area from the elements. Whether it is sun protection during the summer months or shelter from a rainy New Zealand winter, mega shelters are a way schools can ensure children grow up safe, happy and healthy.
